Historical photos of Manly Quarantine Station

Maybe people viewing these photos may know more about them ......

Tom Gray of Townsville wrote ......

Some years ago I found some photographs in a second hand shop in Windsor, NSW. As I was posted to the School of Artillery I instantly recognised the photos as views of the Quarantine Station.

A football match being played on a flat area near the beach.

Two children playing on the beach.

A lady holding a small child.

The Arch

A photo of a steam ferry "LORNA DOONE" at the wharf with disembarking passengers.

Close up of the luggage and the front of the LORNA DOONE.

Quarantine Station buildings.

Some carvings in sandstone made by ship's crew of SS Aldenham in 1908.

Inscription says:

STOP

Let weary travellers listen as we tell
The awful treatment that to us befell
On the 'Mariposa' many were our woes
'Tis a mercy we haven't turned up our toes.

I remember seeing the carvings when I was at the School of Artillery in the 90's when I would sometimes take a walk through the Quarantine Station.

I have given copies of these photos to the Manly Art Gallery and I thought you might be interested having a set for your own records. Perhaps the photos were taken by staff living at the Station.
