Sydney and Melbourne city streets were largely deserted on New Year’s Eve, while Victoria prepares to close the border to NSW at midnight
Almost 1100 people were killed on Australia’s roads in 2020, reports AAP.
The preliminary figure is only slightly less than the previous year, despite much of the country being in Covid-19 lockdown for consecutive months of 2020.
More from the New South Wales-Victoria border:
Gabrielle Dolan was travelling back to Victoria from a holiday at Bermagui on New South Wales’ coast. She told Guardian Australia that “after waiting five hours everyone was just waved through”.
I crossed the border at about 10pm, i mentioned to police inspecting permits my confusion when trying to understand the new restrictions. They said that without phone or internet reception at their checkpoint they were caught out completely, and also struggled to know new rules. https://t.co/UbKce425SZ
